During U.S. Assistant Secretary Daniel Russel’s visit to Papua New Guinea, on July 2 he announced new funding opportunities, in the amount of $1.8 million dollars to create an entrepreneurial ecosystem for women in Papua New Guinea to enable women’s economic empowerment.  This new funding will help establish a PNG Women’s Business Center to provide a physical space for women, both established and up-and-coming businesswomen, to gain access to vital resources for economic empowerment such as training, mentoring, and access to entrepreneurial-related information and support.  It will also help grow the capacity and ingenuity of female entrepreneurs in Papua New Guinea by holding business competitions and offering preparatory and post-competition training and mentoring to ensure participants the best chance of success in their businesses. Additionally, the funding will help incorporate entrepreneurship into the curriculum at several of Papua New Guinea’s major universities and will support the PNG Women’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry through technical assistance, mentoring, and training.

Speaking to an audience of young Papua New Guinean professionals, government leaders, and business entrepreneurs at the Gateway Hotel in Port Moresby, Russel highlighted this programming as tangible evidence of the U.S. commitment to empowering Papua New Guinean women and underscored the U.S. commitment to the Pacific region.  He encouraged the audience to take on the challenge to become the next generation of Papua New Guinea’s leaders and challenged them to pursue sustainable, inclusive, and transparent economic growth for all Papua New Guineans. During his speech, Assistant Secretary Russel focused on the shared values Papua New Guinea and the United States have in common and praised Papua New Guinea in its burgeoning leadership role among Pacific Island nations. Most significantly, Assistant Secretary Russel challenged the young, professional Papua New Guinean audience to continue their struggle to empower women and ensure that women achieve their rightful place in shaping Papua New Guinea’s future.

Assistant Secretary Russel is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service. Prior to his appointment as Assistant Secretary on July 12, 2013, Mr. Russel served at the White House as Special Assistant to the President and National Security Council (NSC) Senior Director for Asian Affairs. During his tenure there, he helped formulate President Obama’s strategic rebalance to the Asia-Pacific Region, including efforts to strengthen alliances, deepen U.S. engagement with multilateral organizations, and expand cooperation with emerging powers in the region.  Since joining the Foreign Service in 1985, he has held multiple postings in the United States and overseas, including in Japan, the Netherlands, Cyprus, and Korea.

Yesterday the Oil Search Pacific Games Relay continued its journey around NCD with the Moresby South electorate hosting the Baton.

The communities of Moresby South showed up in strength to support their MP, the Minister for the Pacific Games, Justin Tkatchenko and their community sporting stars.

Thousands of people lined the streets and followed the Relay as it made its way from Manu Autoport, through Kaugere and Gabutu and then into town and up to Konedobu.

The Relay passed by the villages of Mahuru, Pari, KiraKira and Koki where yet more people joined the sea of people walking with the Baton on its final legs of the Relay.

At Sabama Market crowds packed the sides of the road and standing up on bus stops and buildings to get a view.

School children from all the schools along the route lined up to see the Baton and were swamped as the crowds passed by.

Through town the Games sponsors and corporates got their chance to take part in the relay though struggled to make their way through the crowds to get to each changeover.

A massive turnout, with all continuing to support Team PNG and wish them well.

Following the Relay the Baton was taken to a number of Games Sponsors so that staff could have an opportunity to touch the Baton and take photos, including Puma energy, JDA Wokman, Steamships, BSP, Moore and Petromin.

The Oil Search Pacific Games Relay completes its journey around PNG today with visits to the Motu Koita villages of Baruni, Tatana and Hanuabada and a final farewell function at Sir Hubert Murray Stadium from 5pm, to which all the public are welcome.

PNG refutes Team Fiji's negative comments on water in Port Moresby

Papua New Guineas, water company Eda Ranu CEO Henry Mokono has refuted claims by Team Fiji about the water supplied to the games venues, by saying PNG's water through Eda Ranu  is best  in the Pacific and rank 10th in the World standard. Its the safest water to drink during Pacific games. He said his company delivers  safe, quality water to residents every day in the city brushed aside negative comments made by the Team Fiji.

“My team were never consulted before the report went out. I am seriously concerned that such visitors coming into this country would judge Papua New Guinea by its cover and not look deeper to see what’s happening,” he said.

Noting Eda Ranu’s team of technicians and micro biologists, as well as appliance of international standards, Mokono said tap water is safe for consumption, with the quality compared with water in major Australian cities.

Eda Ranu’s use of international-standard equipment and infrastructure, including trained personnel under the Sydney Water Corporation, 60 testing points and daily testing of drinking water, highly compromise claims by Team Fiji, who are currently boiling water before drinking, from fear of contamination.

“We have Fijians, Samoans and Cook Islanders  who live and work in Port Moresby. We’ve got Australians, New Zealanders, Americans, Filipinos that live and work in Port Moresby that have never complained of water contamination.

“For someone to be here on PNG soil for just two days, saying that Eda Ranu water is contaminated, is a joke,” said Eda Ranu CEO Henry Mokono this morning.

Mokono further insisted that tapped water is, in fact, healthier than bottled water, echoing many other studies that show the environmental damage and health risks bottled water has caused.

Meanwhile few of the sports began today that saw PNG beat Kiribati in Men's touch. More stories on Pacific Games can be read on >  2015 Pacific Games News and Results .

Pacific Games Opening ceremony to bring PNG’s history to the present

PORT MORESBY, July 4 – Crowds can expect the opening of the Port Moresby 2015 Pacific Games to be a celebration of Papua New Guinea’s rich cultural history while pointing to the country’s future direction says Airleke Ingram (PNG) co-artistic director Saturday’s opening ceremony.
“We can use our culture to draw upon our values and maintain our integrity as a people and use that to guide us into the future,” says Ingram, a music producer, traditional drummer and famed percussionist who hails from Gaba Gaba.
The ceremony will be themed closely around the local region’s hiri trade, an important cultural influence.
“It’s a really key part of our culture. There are a lot of songs, dances and tattoos.” he says.
The ceremony will pay homage to the trade relationship between the motuan and gulf province people and the role this played in shaping historical and modern day PNG.
“These things set our culture up, where we really got our spirit of generosity and the fair distribution of wealth,” says Ingram.
“The opening ceremony is on motuan land, they are the traditional people of the area and we wanted to pay respects to what we called the ‘papa ground’, the traditional people of the land.”
It would not be a celebration of Papua New Guinea without a sing-sing.
Opening ceremony Merryn Hughes (AUS) says that it might be biggest sing-sing ever in Papua New Guinea.
“There are about 800 to 900 sing-sing performers who will be part of the cast,” says Hughes. “Nothing like this has ever been seen before in Papua New Guinea.”
The sing-sing performers are part of a cast of 3,000 performers, and almost 300 ceremony staff, approximately 200 of which are volunteers.
A team of people that both Huges and Ingram say they are “blessed” to be involved with.

PORT MORESBY, July 4 – Tura the Kokomo, the official mascot for the Port Moresby 2015 Pacific Games, is a bird that organisers hope will help spread fun, enthusiasm, friendship and community spirit throughout the Games.
Tura, a bird that is actually a hornbill, is the creation of 13-year-old Taka Seigori (PNG), a year-five student from Tubuseria Primary School in Central Province, Papua New Guinea.
Seigori put forward Tura as her submission in a nationwide school competition launched in late 2013 to determine the official mascot of Port Moresby 2015.
The aim behind the competition was to come up with a mascot that was unique to PNG, would incorporate all the different traditions and cultures of the country and would directly reflect the spirit of the Games.
The word Tura means friend in the Motuan language, which fitting describes the friendly and cheeky characteristics of the hornbill.
Tura is a modern version of the hornbill, known in the country as Kokomo.
The colourful crown on Tura’s head symbolises the colours of the 2015 Pacific Games and reflects a once in a lifetime opportunity for athletes and the whole of the Pacific to shine and be remembered.
The colours also represent and describe the host city, Port Moresby, as welcoming and friendly.
Tura was unveiled in the middle of last year in Port Moresby, and it has since travelled to other provinces around the country spreading the message and spirit of the 2015 Pacific Games with everyone it comes across.
The executive manager of marketing for the Games, Ken Siminji, said that sending Tura around the country was a good way of creating a sense of national pride. “Tura represented the perfect symbol to be able to go around the country, raise the excitement and get people to understand and appreciate that they can still be part of the Games regardless of where they are,” Siminji said.
“Yes the Games are happening in the city, but people everywhere around the country are united in celebration because of Tura’s work in connecting the rest of the country to the Games.”
Tura the Kokomo, the shining ambassador for the Games, will be helping to share people’s experiences and the excitement for the duration of the Games that will last a lifetime.

Toua sets Port Moresby 2015 opening ceremony alight

PORT MORESBY, July 4 – Dika Toua (PNG) lit the Port Moresby 2015 Pacific Games cauldron on Saturday evening, concluding a night of colour, music, dancing and fluttering feathers that celebrated Papua New Guinea’s rich culture and opened the fifteenth Pacific Games.
Toua, one of Papua New Guinea’s most decorated athletes, took to the heights of the stadium to set fire to a conch shell after HRH Prince Andrew, Duke of York (GBR) declared the Games open.
The ceremony began with 1000 women and children performing under blue lights that simulated waves surging and splashing from one end of the stadium to the other.
The waves came together to represent an serpent that harked back to the father of the hiri trade, Edai Siabo, who is said to have been given the knowledge that was needed to establish the exchange system by an eel.
Next, attention was drawn to the 12 traditional trade canoes surrounding the stadium, these lakatoi were flanked by women bearing pots and surrounded by dancing Motuans.
This imagery aimed to represent the importance of the hiri trade in the development of early Papua New Guinean society, and particularly the movement of clay pots in exchange for sago.
Young women were then revealed atop four towers in each corner of the stadium’s grassed area, chanting to summon their respective villages’ lakatois and the children carrying illuminated home-made lanterns.
The children surrounded two crab claw sails as they were raised to vertical by the descendants of the Boera villagers, the founders of the hiri trade.
The stadium then fell into darkness as the chilling sago beating song echoed through the crowd.
The ceremony then moved on to the call to nation with the four regions of Papua New Guinea – the Southern, Momase, New Guinea Islands and Highlands – being drawn into festivities.
The drummers beat out a rhythm that heralded the beginning of the sing-sing, and the most spectacular part of the evening.
Sing-sing groups from all corners of the country came together, swaying, bouncing, stamping and chanting in a spectacular scene that only could happen in Papua New Guinea – but never before has it been seen on this scale.
As the sing-sing came to an end, all eyes turned to the entrance of a large PNG flag and a group of young locals who recited words from the PNG constitution, celebrating the country’s 40th year since independence from Australia.
Next entered the stars of show; the athletes.
Led by New Caledonia, the 24 nations represented at the Games marched into the stadium with many pausing on the main stage to perform a impromptu version of their respective national dances.
Of course, the biggest reception came for the hosts, led by flag bearer Linda Pulsan who held the PNG flag aloft in reverence, stopping at centre stage as her team flowed past her.
More dancing followed on the central stage before a string band brought the athletes’ parade to a crescendo.
With the athletes in place around the performance area the ceremony continued, depicting the development of Port Moresby into a modern city.
A city skyline was held high by performers on the stage while masked people carrying representations of the modern trappings of Port Moresby – cars, planes, ships and helicopters – mimed the the hectic thoroughfares of the host city.
With the cultural aspect of the ceremony out of the way, it was time for the formalities.
The Pacific Games ceremonial flag was raised before a prayer and then the athletes’ and officials’ oaths.
Next there were speeches by Emma Waiwai (PNG), chair of the PNG 2015 Pacific Games Organising Committee, Pacific Games Council President Vidhya Lakhan (FIJ) and PNG Prime Minister Peter O’Neill.
Waiwai said that she believes that the Games have been a powerful catalyst for change in Port Moresby.
O’Neill followed up with a vote of confidence for the Games.
“I know these games will be the best ever,” he said. “The facilities we have built for you are world-class and they will continue to benefit our Pacific region for years to come.”
“This is a great time to live in the Pacific, we have a great future ahead of us.”
All that was left was for the most honoured guest at the ceremony, HRH Prince Andrew, to declare the Games open.

The Hunters landed in Australia yesterday and are riding the crest of a club record nine-game winning streak.

Their most recent loss came way back in mid-April to Wynnum Manly, coincidentally the last time they featured on Channel 9 and coach Michael Marum will be after an improved showing in front of the cameras this time around.

Marum has made one change to his starting side - Lawrence Tu'u earning a promotion to lock while Oti Bland Tony is the new addition on an extended bench.

Home side the Dolphins got past Norths 32-22 in their match last weekend, but have only won one from their last four.

In a somewhat surprise move, regular backrower Trent Richardson has been selected to partner Luke Capewell in the halves.

Despite not being named, ex-Central Queensland Capras flyer Marlon Doak is in line to make his Dolphins debut.

The former Australian touch football representative has set the Brisbane Rugby League competition alight this season, scoring 16 tries for affiliate club Gaters.

There are three potential milestones to be reached this weekend for the Hunters with Noel Zeming requiring only two more points to bring up 100 for second consecutive season; while Thompson Teteh and skipper Israel Eliab have both scored 23 tries for PNG, one less than Garry Lo who is top with 24.

Fiji broke the record for the biggest win in international football history with a 38-0 victory over Federated States of Micronesia at the Bisini Ground  in Port Moresby today.
The Fijians clearly had the world record in their sights from kickoff, motivated by Micronesia's 30-0 defeat to Tahiti in their previous match in Pool A of the Pacific Games soccer competition.
Fiji took a 21-0 lead into halftime, prompting Micronesia to replace the goalkeeper Walter Pengelbew with outfield player Dominic Gadad in an attempt to stem the tide.
Though Gadad fared slightly better he still conceded another 17 goals after the break.
Fiji now breaks the record set in 2001 when Australia beat American Samoa 31-0.

Fiji's Tulo defends his Pacific Games title in men's weight lifting

PORT MORESBY, July 5 – Manueli Tulo (FIJ) earned medal for the third consecutive Pacific Games on Sunday, taking all three golds in the men’s 56kg weightlifting competition at the PNG Power Dome.

His lifts in the snatch (107kg) and clean and jerk (127kg) gave him a comfortable victory with a total tally of 234kg.

Tulo, who previously won overall bronze at the Pacific Games in 2007 and overall gold in 2011, defended his title despite enduring a significant absence from the sport prior to this year’s competition.

“I feel so happy,” Tulo said. “It’s been a while coming back into international competition. I’ve been away from the sport for about two years now, and for me to come and compete here and win three gold medals, defending my title, it’s a really big boost to me.”

Elson Brechtefeld (NRU), the defending overall bronze medallist from 2011, earned the overall silver medal (220kg) and also took home silver in the snatch (100kg) and bronze in the clean and jerk (120kg).

Tulo’s teammate Poama Qaqa (FIJ) earned overall bronze (213kg) to go with bronze in the snatch (92kg) and silver in the clean and jerk (121kg).
“I know how he has been training back in Fiji,” Tulo said of Qaqa. “He came down all the way from 62kg to 56kg, and to win a silver and two bronze, I just can’t say anything about it. He’s just amazing.”

The event was filled with young lifters, with Tulo (25) and Brechtefeld (21) two of only three wrestlers in the field older than 20 years of age.

“I have all the respect for these lifters,” Tulo said. “There were really brilliant young lifters coming into this competition, and they really pushed me to my limit today. They’ll be very good lifters in the future.”

The oldest competitor in the field, 30-year-old Ray Gori Lolo (PNG), finished fifth overall (183kg).

“Being in this sport makes me feel younger,” Lolo said. “Doing fitness is good for my health, making me feel young, stronger and active. I love the sport, I really do.”

Lolo finished narrowly behind teammate Andrew Sire (PNG) for fourth place overall. Sire’s total of 185kg held up when Lolo dropped his final clean and jerk attempt of 111kg.

Douglas Ao Junior Mea (PNG) narrowly edged Larko Doguape (NRU) for sixth place with overall totals of 176kg and 175kg, respectively. David Nickson Biolo (SOL) was eighth with an overall total of 166kg.

Sire and Lolo led the way for Papua New Guinea in an event where six out of the 13 competitors were representing the host nation.

Lolo hopes that he will be leading another strong Papua New Guinea contingent in the next Pacific Games.

“I’m hoping to win a medal next time,” Lolo said. “Any medal will do.”
